A central air conditioner is a great system to have for the hot months of the year, but it will not do a lot of good if the system will not turn on. A central AC system can experience many problems that will prevent it from cooling a house, but if the system will not kick on at all, it could be due to something simple or something major. Here are several things you should do and know about if your system will not kick on.
Check your thermostat
While it may sound silly, you should always begin troubleshooting a central AC problem by checking your thermostat. The thermostat is the device that controls the system. If the system will not turn on, there is a chance that there might be a problem with the thermostat. While you probably cannot fix a bad thermostat, there might be issues with the thermostat that are preventing the system from turning on.
The first thing to check is that the thermostat is set to cool. To make sure it is, flip the switch to heat or to off and then flip it to cool. If this does not make the system kick on, press the temperature arrows down at least five degrees from where the temperature is currently at. By doing this, you can make sure that your system knows that it needs to kick on. If nothing happens when you do this, you should check a couple more things before contacting an AC repair company.
Check the fuse and shut-off switch
To check the fuse, go to your electrical panel and make sure the fuse to the system did not trip. When you do this, you should turn the fuse off and then back on, just to make sure it resets and that it is on. Secondly, check to see if there is a shut-off switch for the system. This would be located near the system and would look like a light switch in most cases.
Check the drain pan
The third thing you should check is the drain pan, which is located near the floor on the system itself. This pan is there to stop water from the system from flooding your house, and most central AC systems have a switch tied to this pan that stops a system from running when the pan is full of water. If the pan is full of water, this could be the problem.
If you cannot figure out why your system is not operating, contact an air conditioning repair company. They can figure this out and fix the appropriate problems for you to get your central AC system up and running once again.
